Assuring the Safety & Competency of our Next Generation Workforce

Daryl Brister, Director, Shea Capability & Compliance Solutions, LLC

Expo A1

With the exit of our current more senior and capable workforce, our next generation is being left to stand alone in the workplace like no other time in US history. Training alone no longer works without competent, wise individuals in the workplace to guide and direct the safety and learning of the next generation. The majority of industrialized nations move to competency management 25+ ago, while in the US we only focused on training with no formal workplace performance assessment. A standard competency model looks at 3 main principles: Knowledge, Experience, and Performance, which all interact together to move an individual along their personal journey towards competency in a given role. Successfully combining these 3 attributes will help mold a person’s behaviors on the job. Safety & Technical skills are at the core of those working in high hazard environments - they have to go together, so lets help make a difference for our next generation.
