Choosing the Best Leading Indicators for HSE Performance
Matt O'Neil, Vice President of HSEQ, Covestro
Floral A2
In our industry, and specifically in the HSE landscape, the use of “Leading Indicators” is one method to drive continuous improvement in our HSE performance. However, very often what we end up with are the traditional “Lagging Indicators” to measure our current performance, track against previous performance, or possibly benchmark against other sites, companies and industries. To be very clear, Leading Indicators should be about preventing, avoiding, minimizing or controlling events before they happen. As for Lagging Indicators – oh well, it’s too late!
Whether we call these Leading Indicators using the terminology KPIs, PIs, metrics or something else, there are several important aspects to consider in selecting them:
o Are they leading indicators or actually lagging? Can they serve as both?
o Do they measure the most important drivers in our HSE performance?
o Can we influence them and define measures to achieve continuous improvement?
o Can we observe small improvements?
o Are they well understood by the average worker (i.e. also non-HSE)?
o Are they easily measured or do they require manual inputs?
o Do they conflict with any other metrics?
This session is intended to be interactive, where other HSE leaders should share their experiences with identifying and using Leading Indicators. A short presentation regarding “Leading” vs. “Lagging” indicators will be made, so we can hopefully avoid falling back into discussion about the traditional Lagging Indicators. Finding effective Leading Indicators that we can take back to our own sites is the goal of the session. Active participation is expected
