Facility Siting for Temporary Structures

Jodi Kostecki and Thomas Mander, BakerRisk

Expo A1

Since the 2005 Texas City Refinery explosion, updates to facility siting requirements have resulted in owners/operators seeking blast resistant buildings to house essential personnel near operational units. While many facilities have invested in permanent buildings to achieve this, owners/operators often seek alternative “temporary” solutions such as blast resistant modules (BRMs) and tents to comply with API 752/753/756. This presentation will discuss the ability of these alternative structures to protect personnel as well as key things to consider from a facility siting perspective before ultimately selecting your protective solution. Examples will be provided from full-scale tests of BRMs and tents to highlight key aspects of structural response to the audience.
