Virtual Gemba Walks - The Path to Success in the Virtual World

Kirk Madere, onePSS Luling Site Coordinator, & Ashley Griffin, Site Improvement Leader, Bayer Crop Sciences

Expo A3

Gemba-the real place, where the work happens. We all heard the term used but what does it mean in a virtual world?  How do we “Gemba” if we cannot actually go to the real place, where the work actual happens?  With COVID, most companies were left to try to manage shop floors remotely.  We will review what a virtual Gemba is for Bayer.  At one of Bayer’s largest global manufacturing sites, the Gemba walk is vital for creating site alignment in manufacturing and most importantly, SAFETY.  We will share the top to bottom structure and how to support accountability.  With any new concept, there is always a learning curve.  We will also share some of the limitations and pitfalls we discovered along the journey.  In the end, we will leave the group with some key ideas to bring back to their workplaces on how to be more effective in the virtual world of Gemba walks.  With minimal efforts, these key ideas will be value adding as they put teams on the path to continuous improvements to safer work environments.
